Creative Solutions for Coastal Communities was an international North Atlantic conference for discussion and exchange of information regarding challenges and solutions for small coastal communities.

The conference was held on November 1-3, 2006 in Lanse au Clair, Labrador, Canada.

The objective of the conference is to link small coastal communities in Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Farroe Islands, Scotland, and Canada, and begin a process of sharing best practices and innovative strategies in addressing four key issues: Fishery, Tourism, Out Migration and Public Services. The conference begins a process of greater collaboration on key issues with clear direction and mandates for follow-up.

Specifically, the conference helped to:

  • Bring together North Atlantic community practitioners to share best practices and lessons learned in the themes of fishery, tourism, out-migration and public services;
  • Showcase initiatives and share approaches being taken to address small coastal community issues;
  • Collectively identify specific actions that will help build strong and sustainable coastal communities;
  • Clearly identify the opportunities and barriers facing small coastal communities and discuss collaborative approaches to address these issues;
  • Explore opportunities for development of partnerships and knowledge networks amongst regions and agencies.
